Another question:
I've eventually upgraded the stereo / speakers in every Audi I've owned. With this car, I'm very happy with the integration of the system with the MFSW and I'm thrilled with the my new OEM BT unit. But I want better sound...
What are your thoughts on replacing all the OEM speakers (including the sub), but keeping the Symphony II head unit?
If I look at my home system, I spent the majority of my budget on the speakers and I've always been happy with that.

Yields a very detailed answer:
The factory speakers have always been in my experience the weakest link in the sound system.
If you look in my sig,(Stereo Install part II) there is a comparison betweeen the better Bose speaker, and aftermarket.
There are two problems though, when replacing the factory speakers.
First, there is a difference in the DC resistance of the factory speaker, and the aftermarket. The Bose for example are 2 ohm drivers, and generally, the off the shelf aftermarket are 4 ohm. In a direct replacement scenario, what would happen is that you would have reduced volume from this difference.
Second, off the shelf aftermarket speakers will usually require more power to push them properly to sound good.
Some Audi owners have had good results in just replacing the tweeters and mid/woofers in the front doors with Audax or Dynaudio drivers.
Judging by what you had in your '95 90, I would say that your best path is to replace the factory speakers with a component set, and add a decent (not overpriced) 50watt RMS 4 channel amplifier.
Hope this helps, and feel free to ask me for any further info you may need.

Sounds reasonable...
But, why does Audi use speakers with a non-standard resistance?
Not that this surprises me: when I had the B/A speakers installed in my 90Q, they had to bypass the amps in the doors. I thought that was odd that Audi put amps on individual speakers. Trying to make it difficult???
Thanks for your advice. I'm saving your response as part of my plan for my next major mod.
Until then, I remain conflicted. You see, I sold the 90Q to my brother-in-law and he still raves about the stereo every time I see him....I got a car upgrade (90 to A6) but downgraded in audio quality.

Well, it's not so much that Audi does, but more the OEM manufacturers
..who (I believe) make the non-standard resistance so that it forces a complete overhaul and purchase of aftermarket equipment.
For an OEM audio company (whether it be Pioneer, Alpine, Matsu****a/Panasonic etc.) it's a win-win situation for them.
