Default strange noise in the cold

Temperatures recently dropped to -15C or about 5 F and when cold, the car is making a strange "whirring" or "groaning noise when foot is lifted off the accelerator (ie slowing down) This lasts for about 3 - 5 minutes. It has only made this noise with the recent low temperatures. Has anyone else experienced the same or does anyone know what the noise is. The noise dissappears once the car is really warm.

Default My 00' 2.7t does similar things

When it is cold (like 0-25 F) it makes all kinds of whirring noises. The noises My car makes seem to have very little correlation with the accelerator. Also the clutch, steering and transmition are noticble stiffer.

Default Re: Ditto

With the recent cold snap (Minnesota), I've noticed some unusual "whining" too. No idea what is causing it (other than the cold temps, I mean), but I sure hope it's not damaging. The owner's manual says not to let the engine warm up while the car is stationery, either -- you're supposed to start driving as soon as you turn it on. Opinions on that?

I've also noticed that my MPG number seems to mysteriously drop a couple tenths of a point while the car is sitting out in the cold. (i.e., when I turn off the car it reads 13.9; come back a couple hours later and start it up, and it reads 13.5). Anyone else notice this?

Having a lot of experience at -10 to 15 degrees in the New Mexico mountains, I can testify that many strange noises occur. But they go away when the car has warmed up. And, IMO, nothing is damaged. How would you act if you had to sit out all night in frigid temps? My joints are bad enought as it is.

I picked my 01 2.7T recently also, and I have notice the same noise that you desribe. I attributed the noise to a pair of bad Diverter Valves (DV). I also own a 00 TT, and the TT forum have a lot of complaint about this; hence, I tried a new Forge DV from "stratmosphere" on my TT and it fixed the problem, I am thinking of doing the same thing with my 2.7T. Below is stratmosphere's web address

http://www.stratmosphere.com/forge_valves.htm</a

Very interesting. What, exactly, do the diverter valves do?
