Default Strange post, but I filled my 4.2 up with gas this afternoon and then drove home...

To my suprise when I parked it, locked it and started to walk away I heard the oddest knocking sound coming from the right back wheel well where the gas tank is located. I have never heard this type of sound from this area of any car. Sure a knocking sound under the hood, but this was weird. So then I removed the gas cap and it stopped. I replaced the cap and it starts again.

My question, therefore would ask if the capping(thus pressurizing) the fuel tank start any process where the gas is being funnled, moved or settled in the tank area to create this noise?? Remember the car is not running and is locked.

Default Kind of of like a muffled repeting fairly low pitched ping sound.

At first I thought it was the parking assistance alarm malfunctioning, but it clearly wasn't. I'm going to see if it happens tomorrow or the next time I gas up; but I'm stumped. The noise had ceased when I walked the dog a few mins ago.

Default I wonder if their is a "breather tube" arrangement that is plugged? Is the pinging metallic...

sounding or like when you tap a highly inflated balloon?

Default Srosie do you think that there may have been some strange contact or short circuit

momentarily or for a short while that triggered something in your subwoofer that is located right by the right rear of the car inside the trunk in that little compartment. If not, this may remain one of life's "Unsolved Mysteries".

Default Gas tank straddles the drive shaft and is under the rear seats.

I wondered how it equalized the load, maybe that is what it was doing.

Steve, I've noticed on a few occasions that I've had a sort of a groaning noise coming from the right rear. I haven't tried uncapping the gas tank yet as it has seemed to be coming from just inside the right rear wheel. I'll try uncapping it next time I hear the noise. Either way, this is certainly weird.

How far did you fill up your tank?, did you top it off?
I thought the 4.2 like the TT has a rather complex fuel vapor recovery system. I remember reading about it when the TT came out but I cant find the article now.
Maybe a post on the TT side can answer this?
