Sometimes - not everytime - my 2.7T 6sp makes a moo-like sound - a bit like a buoy - when starting from a standstill. It comes from the front and lasts 1-2secs. It disappears as I accelerate. Any ideas? Thanks.

brakes never fully release, when you release the pedal, the pressure is relaxed on the pistons in the calipers, but the seal will always hold the pads slightly against the rotor. When releasing the brake and just as the car begins to accelerate from a stop, you will sometimes hear a groaning or moaning sound. It's just the brakes releasing as the rotor turns. It's sometimes caused in vehicles with higher mileage when the caliper(s) become stuck and don't free up easily.

I assumed that it was related to the ESP since my 2000 2.7t didn't have it but the 2001 does. I usually only hear the sound when first driving the car after starting the engine. I don't hear it when driving away from a stoplight for example, since the car has already been running for a while.

I've got the same sound you mentioned. It only occurs when I am beginning to accelerate (around 15-20mph) at normal throttle pressure and only happens when engine and transmission are cold. Sometimes it is at the shift between 1st and 2nd but I have heard it when the tranny stays in 1st for an extended period when it is cold. My son has a 2001 s4 with ESP and I have never heard this sound from his car. I have no idea what it is but it is definitely not brake moan.
