We;ll maintained turbos will last pretty much forever.
The other 99% (exaggeration, yes, but how much?) will fail, but not of old age.
Since these are typically damaged by lack of lubrication and/or excessive heat and pressure at the bearings, chipping should increase the likelihood of premature failure exponentially.
So I dont buy such a simplification. I watch turbos die all the time. Its usually predictable from a quick look and listen. To the owner, not the car.
