Symphony Radio Stuck in Dash - solution
So, after three and a half years in the wilderness, I've managed to get my hands on a 2003 A6 Final Edition 1.9 TDI (I'm in the UK). Got Dolphin Grey, leather, parking sensors, sat nav - plus four rings on the front and rear!!!
Anyway - I want to hook up my iPod to the Symphony II (with 6-disc in-dash) but could I get it out? Nope I couldn't. Got the keys and nearly ripped my fingers to sheds. Bought better keys and still no joy. Hunted through the posts and picked up all the tips I could - and finally got it out.
I had the problem where one side seemed to free up easily - but the right hand side just wouldn't budge. I didn't know if it was that the clip wasn't moving or if something else was stopping it. So eventually I thought perhaps I could get something to wedge down the side to get the unit to move would free the clips from the chassis.
Sure enough, put the keys in and pulled (using the tape slot) to get the left side out as far as possible (about 1/8 inch!). Then, pushed a 12 inch plastic shatterproof ruler (so it wouldn't scratch anything) down the RHS of the radio. Gave it a little twist to add some more leverage and pulled the tape slot hard. At last, it came free!! The keys had moved the clips correctly, so it must just have been that it is such a tight squeeze in there.
Thanks to everyone who has posted their ideas and tips. I was SO delighted about just getting a radio out of the dash. You'd have thought I'd won the lottery!! :-)
