Default Synthetic oil every 10k miles?

Since I'm used to having to chage my oil every 5,000 or 7,500 miles, it's a bit strange to think that Audi only requires the oil to be changed every 10k miles. My service rep said that since I own my car, I might want to bring in my own Mobile 1, and have Audi use that when the oil is changed. Thoughts?

If I switch to synthetic, do I need to have the oil system flushed to remove all of the conventional oil first?

Default Many here use Mobil 1, myself included...

You do not need to flush the system, synthetic is compatible with dino so you can mix the two with no adverse effects.

Default I too own my Audi and use nothing but Mobile One and I change it every

5K, not 10K as warranted. I bring my own Mobile One in for the oil changes. It is more expensive this way (an extra $35 each 5K) but I like the "insurance dividends" it pays me in knowing my car is in better than normal care. The Audi dealer said that he sees probably 95% Mobile One for those requesting a synthetic and 5% "other" synthetics used. You do not need to change/clean out the old "dino" oil. Both are compatable with one another. Good luck..

Default Didn't I read that Mobile 1 is not as good as it once was; isn't all synthetic?

Here is an informative thread:

Default Castrol used to be a blend. The Amsoil diagram you linked to, I don't know about the relevence of

the test. Duralube can beat most oils in a test they use, I saw it on TV. ;-)

Default I've had some petro engineers tell me that 4-ball test is interesting but basically worthless

as applied to a real engine running in real life.

So make of it what you will. I've heard no reliable info suggesting new Mobil 1 is other than 100% synth, but if in doubt IMO Amsoil & Red Line are as good, maybe better in some cases (eg Amsoil for extended drain interval).
