The "original" Nav+ (now commonly referred to as RNS-D) was CD-based. It was available in 2 versions: Navi C and Navi D. The OEM US units with just the centre cluster display were also available in C & D.
The new DVD-based Nav+ (think it still says Navigation Plus on the faceplate) is called RNS-E, with different US and European versions.

and it doesn't work. It's for the D-NAVI. Trying to figure out which version disc I need to buy, because I'm thinking I bought the wrong one.

The most recent version is dated Feb. 2004. I bought the whole set as soon as they came out for $319, but I think they're down to about $250 or $275 now.
It took them a few years to come out with it -- the version before that was 7/2001. I wouldn't bet that there will be any futures updates, but you never know.
D-Navi has different revision dates -- there were '02 and '05 versions.
