Default temperature gauge stays on C

Hi good people, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or know what the remedy is for my problem:--My 1998 A6 temp. gauge stays on C and hardly blows hot air. All I get is some warm air. This has been the case all winter in cold Ohio. But anytime the weather temp. goes up to about 40 degrees, the gauge goes all the way to teh middle and blows hot air. What could be the problem?

Default bad thermostat?

The trick is whether the engine coolant is really hot or cold....check it by hand on the upper radiator hose. My guess is the thermostat is stuck open and the engine is truly cold.

Default I agree - it does sound like a T stat problem which is why it behaves normally with...

slighly warmer weather.

maybe, but wouldn't explain cold air...still need to confirm engine temp.

Default How many miles on the car? When was the stat last changed?

Might be time for a full timing belt service.

Default 140K since new, no stat change...explains a lot.

Have you had the coolant changed? Water pump? I assume no timing belt (or the water pump if driven by the TB would have been changed).

How about the rest of the stuff....like tensioners, serp belts, fan clutch?

Probably not fan clutch...they usually fail open, i.e., freewheeling due to clutch fluid leaking out or somesuch, and then overheat, not underheat is the problem.

someone suggested an antifreeze flush. Haven't had a coolant flush.
