Default Is there a REAL need to use premium fuel?

What would happen if we used regular fuel rather than the premium? If losing horsepower is all it is than, it may be worth the downgrade with price of gas these days.

I just read an article that stated this;

With prices already over $4.00 a gallon, premium gasoline is a hard sell these days. But a lot of drivers think because their owners' manual recommends premium, they'll get better fuel economy if they stick with it. Really, they're paying more money for nothing.

Even cars for which premium is recommended won't suffer with regular fuel. Modern engine technology comes to the rescue again. When sensors detect regular instead of premium fuel, the system automatically adjusts spark plug timing. The result is a slight reduction in peak horsepower - really, you'll never notice - but no reduction in fuel economy.

Default Ask yourself, how much am I going to save?

You'd save far more money paying attention to how hard you press on the go-pedal and keeping your tire pressure up.

Default I've STFA is people are saying...

Audi engines are designed to run on premium fuel??!! LOL you got to be kidding. There is no such thing.

Also, people state that premium fuel burns slower?? How so? Are these people chemical engineers to know this?

Default Not really.. The higher the octane rating of the fuel, the more resistant to

detonation it will be. And since our 4.2's have a comp ratio of 11:1, that's not such a bad idea. I've been using 89 lately (mid-grade around here), but I wouldn't go any lower than that.

Default I just tried a full tank of Premium (European 98RON Super+) and it was worse

I expected a slight performance increase from running 98RON (US:93) over the standard 95RON (US:91).
Instead it was like the engine didn't like using it at all. It's gone back to normal since I switched back to 95RON (US:91).

Default Simple math...

The difference between regular and premium is 0.20. 20 gallons of premium is going to cost you $4 more than 20 gallons of regular. In the big picture, is that really an issue? Buy one less coffee or snack during the week. I just don't get when people make it like premium is this major expense compared to regular. That was one of the first things my parents would ask me whenever I got a new car when I was younger. That's when it was $1.50 for premium. It would have been a $4 dollar difference then too. Just my opinion...

Only half the equation. Lower octane = retarded timing to avoid knock = crappy fuel economy
