Thermostat - where is located on A6 2.8 - non quattro?
My friend helped me replace timing belt and water pump about 1 yr ago. At that time we were not able to locate thermostat, so did not replace it. I guess we should look harder.
I think my thermostat went bad, so I need to replace it today.
Does anyone know 100% where it is located in the engine?
Thanks

Behind the timing belt.
Follow the lower radiator hose to the outlet on the engine. The outlet is the thermostat housing. It's about 10 inches long and extends behind the timing belt over to the water pump.

This is a 2.7 picture but is the same. The tstat is under the sliver piece between "A" and "E".

I have a buddy that replaced a tstat on an A4 by only moving the clip into service position, removing the accessory belt and sliding the timing belt forward about a half an inch.
It's a biotch and I wouldn't recommend doing it that way. Also, a Bentley manual is money well spent for this type of stuff.

Thats a very valuable time saving trick. We've been doing it that way for years now. Little tip:
once the timing belt is pulled forward about half the width of the cam gear (passenger side only), take a couple of zip ties and snug them around the belt and cam gear in a couple of places. This will prevent the belt from accidently being pulled off the gear when your wrestling the tstat housing out of the way.
P.S. Do you mind if I use that pic in a website I'm putting together? Its exactly what I need for a short timing belt replacement article I'm writing.

Well, the water pump went out on my 4.2. Might as well do the timing belt. Anything else to replace?
