Default Think I broke my alternator??

Soooo, after spending god knows how many hours replacing the cam chain tensioner seals i decided to remve all the residual oil on the bottom of the engine and turbo as it was sill stinking!

So out comes the jet washer and degreaser, spent about 30 mins washing the underside of the car, the side where the alternator is!

Now when driving the car I can hear a whirring noise thats responsive to rpm, now im assuming ive broke the bearings on the alternator which is now ceating this noise. Theres nothing else really that low down that i could of soaked, water pump etc is too high up!

Does this sound right, what about the serp belt tensioner, could this of gone?

Anything else i should be checking?

Timing belt on right? Serp belt on right? You could start by removing the serp belt and seeing if the noise goes away.

Timing belt is fine, replaced 7k miles ago with the serp belt!

Replaced the seals about 3 weeks ago and its been spot on, ever since I washed it all off its started making this noise!

Can only hear with the windows up, a/c off and radio off when accelerating, cant really hear it outside the car to be honest!

Been looking at pictures and the only thing i could of damaged with the power washer is the Alternator really, tensioner seems too high up to of even got dripped on! Same for anything in the timing belt area, everything is too high up, plus theres the plastic covers stopping 99% of the water getting in!

Ive read its possible to remove the belt without going into service position, I was just going to take the fan off to give me enough access, I have nice skinny arms you see! lol

So I use a 17mm socket on the pulley, and this will unload the spring tensioner yes?

When this is done, is it just a case of pulling off the belt and taking off the socket?

Then putting it back on is the same, socket on tensioner to unload the spring, slip the belt on and take the socket off to load the spring back?

Thankyou!!

You can use a long screwdriver as a mechanics stethoscope...put the metal where you think the whirring is coming from and the other to your ear/temple.
For the alternator you'll have to pull the bellypan and touch from underneath...be careful of moving parts!!!
