There's been much discussion about the "lifetime" ATF fluid. Not all would agree, but changing the ATF and filter every 30-40K should help keep the transmission alive.

But, the parts in the transmission is what makes it so unreliable. Thus, you can change and maintain but if parts quit.. thats that. Once mechanical fails, than best thing to do at that point is get it rebuilt and have those new updated parts from ZF & Audi installed. Thus, making it reliable and stronger than when it came out of the factory.

The one thing I don't understand is that I have heard of people paying $5000 to $6000 for a refurbished transmission. Why would anyone pay that when the $2500 rebuild option exists. I'm located in Northern CA, Santa Rosa to be exact, and I would love for someone to give me the name of a great place to have a rebuild performed should I need that service.
