To those that commute with a manual, you're a better person than I....
I had to take the wife's Subaru Forester w/a 5 speed manual to work today in bumper to bumper traffic in pouring rain. I've never appreciated my Tip more than this morning. My left foot is 10 times stronger than when I left home.
I love rowing the gears myself, but the Tip is too good to make the manual a better choice for those who commute. I have much respect for those who can do it.

I don't mind the clutch at all in commuter traffic
IMO an auto trans not being in the right gear all the time and waiting for downshifts or upshifting when I'm not expecting it is far more annoying than clutching in stop-n-go traffic. Also, I save 3-4 mpg by coasting in neutral while in traffic like that. You can't do that easily w/ an auto.

Use the emergency situation scenario on her
Ask her what she will do if you are driving your car and something happens in a remote area and you can't drive? If she is with you she needs to know how to drive your car.

Have a 3rd party who drives stick well, show her how to do it. Much of the resistance
often comes from family or significant others see them go through the learning process. A competent acquaintance is often the least stressful way to introduce somebody to stick driving. Oh, and if they are female, all the better. Guys and gals communicate differently in case you haven't noticed;-)

that's true, it does force you to plan more too... I feel that if more people drove manuals...
in traffic, we'd have less traffic. If more people paid attention, we'd have less traffic...

I don't. I jump from car to car.. I like stick in sporty cars, auto in big sedans/wagons.
IMHO, a stick in something like an A8 would be silly. Same for my Avant, though, there are times I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a M6 Allroad.. StageIII...
