Besides searching this board. I will give you a brief overview of my experience. I have a different prospective in that I am a DIY guy. (Did timing belt, Clutch, KO4 Turbo swap, exhaust, suspension work etc). I will tell you this . you can get some incrediable deals on them. The later the model the better, mileage depends on how car was treated. If you do some of your own work, these cars are not that bad to work on, you will be ahead of the game. Nothing that major, but this car can nickel and dime you to death
The engine is solid except for leaks: cam seals, timing chain adjuster gaskets, valve cover gaskets. Some have been known to eat alot of oil. Turbo's are OK, tend to be more of a problem in S4's (HEAT, driving style related). Some orginal KO3 turbo's will last > 100K. Also easy chip mods can give 50 to 75 xtra HP and a ton of torque.
Suspensions is good, (great with a few aftermarket upgrades), but control arms and tie rod ends are a notorious weak spot. Try and get a sport model (seats and suspension is better)
Electrics are OK except for bad pixel display problem, HVAC is strong
Auto tranny ok, some faliures before 100K, 6-speed is what this engine is all about.
CArs are very sensative to vibration almost all of these are related to wheel problems (out of balance/bend rims).

more agile than a well sorted A4.
The A4 turns in better - the A6 will seem to plough on in fast turns when the A4 seems to almost trip up on its own front end.
All in all the A6 has so much - little touches like illuminated interior door handles, lights under the seats, storage in the front seats - a luxurious feel of an expensive car.
Go for as late 2.7t as you can find and I would try for a manual box. If you are happy with engine out for new turbo's then lok for a late high mileage car which will be a bargain, and factor in a few extra $$$$ for the job - if they fail. They can be good for 250k or more if looked after properly.
