Hey all, i have a 2001 4.2 and i just noticed that there is a ticking noise in the engine. Never heard it before and somehow i heard it inside the car, but outside it's really faint, until you open the hood. Wondering what it could be? Also, i didn't want to bring it to dealership so they don't see that i had recently lowered the vehicle. Any help would be appreciated..

joking. Ticking could be lots of things. I wouldn't hesitate to bring it in just because you lowered it.

HEHE, that's what i was thinking. I'll try to find someone with another a6 and see how t heir engine sounds. Maybe i'm being paranoid, but i swear i've never heard that noise before.

Do a search with "tapping noise" and you will see my results of repair. 80% improved, not all gone.

I figured it may be the valves making that noise. But, you have a 2.7t and i have a 4.2, so it may differ, not sure. I'll check with the dealer and have them take a gander at it.

when warmed-up, at idle in "D", and on the passenger side of the engine. Absolutely no performance loss or ticking at higher RPM's. I've searched and asked everywhere. No one seems to have heard or dealt with this issue on the 4.2. Many (dealer, indy's and owner's) have speculated, but I'm not going deep into this engine on speculation.

Two oil changes ago, I replaced the oil with three different viscosities (5W-30, 10W-40 and 20W-50... all synthetic) to see if there was a difference. NONE.

Mine makes this noise all the time. I've had the car for 2 months, bought it used with 59,000 miles, had to bring it back 3 times for ESP and ABS sensors, o2 and MAF sensor, paint bubble in right rear fender, and the 4th time which is for the ticking/tapping. When on my way home from wherever i'm giong, i turn off the music, close the windows, and floor the SOB to see if there's anything weird, then at a stop light, i heard the tapping, which was very faint, then when i got home i opened the hood and it was pretty loud. Now, i hardly ever open the hood and if i do, the car is off, so i've no clue if it was already there or it just came out of the blue, but like you said, no power loss, everything is fine, just noise. I'll call the 'stealership' and f/u about it.
