timing belt ..

and the timing belt also drives the water pump. Thus, if your water pump starts to fail it can take the timing belt down with it. If you are out of warranty, I think 60k is a good mileage. Some will disagree, but you're betting $3k+ on that timing belt w/o warranty. [Broken timing belt = damged valves and maybe pistons requiring new heads, etc.] It's a risk/reward thing and I have always erred on the side of caution and spending more (maybe even wasting according to some) on preventative maint. than risking an expensive repair. Mostly a matter of personal choice. Good luck!

There are also a couple of rollers that can do the same.
And agree with your philosophy.
In fact, I need to start A8 timing belt parts acquisition, it is time.

point out (including my tech) the water-pump will probably fail before that. Watch/listen to the water pump as this is an "interference" engine, and a failed water pump may seize the timimg belt...all very bad and $$$$$!
When to do it? What's your comfort level? It can be a DIY project (several good write-ups for this, with pics!) and that is a good time to tackle all the other small items that any higher-milage engine needs, like various seals, gaskets, sensors, etc.

I had my done at 80K on a '99 2.8. My cousin waited until 114K on his passat, lost his TB and had to rebuild his engine as a result.

on the clock, it has 66K now. It is under extended warranty, so technically even if it were to go, I should be covered. I will probably do it at 85-90K. I know others will tell you sooner, but I can't remember a single post on this forum who had catastrophic engine failure due to timing belt breakage or water pump seizure.

this, but ONLY due to factory warranty. I have seen posts about failures, but not that many - but it is a high $ failure. BTW, glad you could help out Ty with his oil change. He seems like a good guy. My weekend is totally full and most of it is doing work helping others. Wife already on the limit... ;-P

every 3k with M1 and people say its a waste. It makes me feel secure, so its worth the $ to me. Good luck with your A8. Your hit would be much bigger than mine if the belt fails...
