Default Point on "better safe than sorry" mantra of so many around here...

or specifically, that people seem to be happy to perform all kinds of non-cost justified maintenance on their vehicles under the guise of "better safe than sorry".

I personally think that there is a less than 10% chance that 4Driver4's timing belt will break causing catastrophic failure in the next 60k-80k miles or so.

In fact, I can't even remember the last time someone on this board has had a timing belt failure.

Even assuming minimal value for 4Driver4's time and effort, the job is a $600-$700 job. Given the 10% likelihood of issues, this translates to the car having a value of $6,000 - $7,000.

Labor wise, the Miata is cake, but the parts cost about the same.

Default I like the math, but my cost will be closer to $300, so $3k is the number.

To Jeff's point, there is also a value is use to be considered.

If you are thinking $300, then you aren't giving yourself near enough credit for your own time.

so 175k was the last change; 2 years ago, means you are at 200k plus now??

I am debating the same subject, early 2004 A6 4.2, has 70k now, not sure if I will move on to a D3 when she hits 90k. Is the Audi norm 90k, 95k, or 105k on the A6 motors???

Tom, where do you put 8 cars? Any neighbors in sight? hehe

Just turned 255k yesterday.

With the 2.8, I always figure that 90k is a safe bet, but I try to do them around 75k. I plan on doing this belt at the end of May, which will be about 5k miles from now, or about 85k on the belt.

As for the cars, we have a two car garage, the pick up lives at my mother's house (she borrows it to haul stuff to a community garden down town) and we have a 4 bay garage that can fit up to six cars that is a few miles away. Everything fits...barely.

You're in the gray zone now, the 80-105k range between where my trusted indep shop owner friend says "do it" and when Audi says it's due.

I would do it sooner, not later.
