Default Tip Chip on 2001 2.8

Has anyone noticed that when your in 5th in reg transmission mode and you step on the gas the car downshifts. But when you go to check it on the manual tiptronic it still shows 5th

Is there a 6th gear or overdrive above 5th

Default Re: Tip Chip on 2001 2.8

I actually noticed that as well. I can't seem to replicate this with the Tip mode. In the Tip mode it's either 5th or 4th. In the Auto mode, however, there seems to be a 4.5th. Not sure what that is. It reminds me of a not so refined torque converter doing its thing on old American cars. But it can't be.

I checked the manual but can't find this info anywhere...

Default it's the torque converter unlocking

It's normal. The car can't shift without unlocking the torque converter, so the first stage of downshifting is to unlock I guess. Next stage would be for it to move down to 4th.

Unlocking the torque converter isn't a bad thing, in fact auto trannies didn't used to ever lock the torque converter. The last company to implement locking torque converters was Mercedes, because leaving the torque converter unlocked all the time leads to smoother tranny operation.

Locking the torque converter leads to more efficient operation and thus improved gas mileage. So after any length of time at highway speeds, your torque converter will be locked.
