Tiptronic Vs Manual 6 speed

...Since most of the respondents have extolled the virtues of the 6 speed that they own, I thought I'd give you impressions of the Tiptronic that the VAST majority of A6 buyers drive. That is to say, the people who have urged you to seriously consider the 6 speed are a very vocal minority of the Audi customer base for the A6.
Don't get me wrong, In a perfect world, I'd drive a 6 speed too, but in the everyday world of commuting, shuttling families around, etc., I find the Tip to be a very nice choice. It, like most things, isn't perfect, but it shifts VERY smoothly, is always ready to put the 2.7T motor in the meat of its very substantial torque/power band, and allows at least a reasonable modicum of control over gear selection when the driver so desires. Its one true foible (a quick shift from 1st to 2nd gear) is no issue at all, once you know how it will react.
So, ask yourself which things are most important to you, and choose the trans that fits those needs the best. I'd buy the Tip again without reservation.

was described as being very ordinary at best, and vastly inferior to BMW sticks, ie, my prev ride. Was this untrue or have things changed? Have enjoyed the TIP on canyon roads (SoCal) and city traffic (lane changes). My recent recode to '32 is questionable as regards TIP mode (ie, revs up too fast in 1st), but AUTO mode seems quicker?

from owning a manual in the past that at times it can be a bit of an irritant. But, when I want it to move or for a country or mountain drive there's just nothing better IMHO. I'll put up with a little nuisance for that kind of fun any day! Just be true to yourself. What do you want?

...and I think that the engine pulls so well in 2nd gear, even from low revs, that except when in "street racing" mode, the quick 1-2 shift in normal mode is fine. The re-code allows you to delay that shift (Which happens even in Tip mode otherwise) to whenever YOU deem appropriate. This is nice extra control to have, for some.
FWIW - recoding the trans can't make the car quicker, because it only changes shift strategies, not gearing or engine power. It might feel quicker at times because it allows the engine to get into the upper reaches of the rev range more often.
