Default tire advice - round tires wanted

Of course they're all round, but I'm looking for regular daddy-car tires that stay round and don't feel like they are square and start to vibrate afer 15-20K miles.

High performance is not a big issue. Yes, I want them to stop me in an emergency, but I'm not following the car ahead within 10 ft like I see a many drivers do. I would like decent tread life though.

These will go on a 99 A6 Avant. Size 205-55-16 I'm in Michigan where it's been known to snow once in a while so all-season tires are needed.

Do H rated tires insure any kind of longer life or smoother ride or are the sidewalls being stiffer just add performance?

So for the everyday drivers out there, what are your recommendations.

Default Higher the speed rating 9H, V, W, Y Z) the softer the compoudn and the LESS the life

As to good all-around tires - Conti Extreme? BTW I'd go 215/55 - the size you choose is borderline low on load rating and could result in bent rims. For my winters I went all teh way to 225/55-16 ( and could nto be happier).

Dunlop SP5000?

Default Sounds like you have a good idea of your needs. Have you been happy with

the tires you've had? If so, why not get another set of those?

Tire Rack has a good tires comparison tool, that will allow you to select a few different tires and compare them side by side across a bumber of attributes. Check it out, it is pretty helpful. You can also read reviews of the various tires on their web site, also helpful.

FWIW, my MY '00 2.7T came with all season ContiTouring 205-55-16 and they were decent tires for 3 years or so, year 'round.

Default I had the same requirements as you and I went with

Goodyear Assurance Comfortred at Discount tire, I believe they were 103.00 each installed with road hazard. I picked these tires after doing a lot of research, I wanted a tire that had a long tread life , quite, smooth, good in the snow and stops well. This winter here in MN these tires were the best I have ever owned. They live up to their name, they are smooth, quite and are wearing nicely and have a 80k tread life warranty.

My second choice was BF Goodrich Traction TA's, but the Goodyears had better reviews.

Default ContiExtremes are the best A/S for snow.

Had them on the S6 for a year and am happy with them so far. Had it out on an extremely slick day once this year where light snow had been pack down on cold roads and became a sheet of ice. The S6 with Extremes performed like a champ getting up some fairly steep hills with ease.

Default trying to find a set that lasts more than 20k myself

I bought the car with new kumho ecsta's, they lasted only about 20k. I then replaced those with conti's contitrac extremes which wore unevenly and after about 15K started to cause a lot of vibration and road noise. I now have a set of yokohama v4 avids which i've only had for about 2-3K but are a wonderful change from my vibrating conti's! we'll see if they last any longer. i'll give a plug for mavis tire, i find them to be cheaper than tirerack and they ship quickly.

Default Thrilled with my Michelin Hydroedge. Yeah, speed rating is poo-pood by some,

but that's based on a lot of triple digit useage. I've got 25k on mine, and no single tread bar less than 8/32. Nothing I've ever had comes close in wet weather.
