Tire size question for 17 inch BBS wheels........

As do 02 and down. The BBS RC's that are currently on our Avant
were originally on an 01 2.7t, and were acquired after-market, and I remember,when I found out that they were 17 x 8, but the OEM wheels were 17 x 7.5, wondering why on earth Audi had had BBS make a narrower version of the wheel for its OEM option?
