I have bent a grand total of 11 rims on two audis.
And yes, Audi has a long history of errors in this regard; among other things they have had two recalls and lost one lawsuit over tires with insufficient load rating. So no, i don;t buy that a bit. They squeezed something on.
Admittedly, the general trend toward low profile tires makes this inevitable, but ignoring generally accepted guidelines seems unnecessarily flippant - and certainly counters any knee-jerk assumption that it is somehow the "proper" size just because Audi specified it on a car they made all of 1200 of.
As i noted below, 0.3" is 7.5% of stock sidewall height, not insignificant. Doubt it? Do the math!
