Default L10 and IPT have had some bad reviews...

Don't know if the reports are valid or not. 3Zero3 seems to be the place to go for upgraded TCs. That said, I've got an L10 TC that has been trouble free for 35K

Agreed. Sure, check the valves. But, the TC is the known weak link

Default Quick note on this subject. Replacing the clutch on a MT is commonplace and accepted as such...

Why is replacing the TC seen as a big deal? Sure, any unplanned repair (particularly expensive ones) sucks. But the TC seems to be viewed as a big deal. Its not. In fact, the cost of a TC replacement is roughly the same, if not cheaper than a clutch replacement. The TC cost is about the same as a clutch / pressure plate / flywheel resurface. Labor is about the same. So, replace the TC with an upgraded version - 3Zero3 or L10 - and move on.

Default Put a bottle of this in the tranny and it will free the valves.

We (transmission shop) use this with all the ZF trannys with great success.<ul><li><a href="http://www.getautohelp.com/automotive_products/60902.html">LubeGuard</a></li></ul>

Default Yes, I was quoted $2000 at my dealer for TC replacement.

I find I can reset the light after about 5 times out with no issue, if I stay in tiptronic or sport mode. It seems to be the 5th gear lockup(for fuel savings) that fails when it exits out of the lock to downshift. I've had mine auto-clear about 15-20 times already in the past 5-6 months I've had it.
My dealer service writer told me, they have a customer with the same issue that's been running on his allroad now with it for over 2 yrs.

Default It is very simple. If the fluid is clean, then the TC is OK.

The dealer would love to replace everything. They will not clean the valve body. They not even allowed to touch it. It is much more profitable to replace the TC.
