I'm installing a trailer hitch on my 2004 A6 Sedan. I'm using it to tow my motorcycle. G/F and I want to do day trips in Oregon on moto bike, but use car for long drives in between.

Anyway, I found a Curt hitch that fits nice (after rear bumper removal).

I'm running into problems finding out how I hook up the electrical for the trailer. I found this in a related (although Q7) AudiForum post - "After you install the Curt hitch, you also need to install OEM tow hitch control module with wire harness along with ecu reset at the dealer if you want to tow the trailer. That is not cheap part." That's scary.

Does anyone have knowledge about the specifics of how to set up my electrical to connect to a trailer (with a 4 wire harness). I STFA'd with no luck for my model and year.

I installed a 46255 from Hopkins and it worked great, then failed a few tows later. I called the company and they said "yes, that is the one we recommend for your car, but the short proof will work even better." They shipped me one (46365) free of charge.

Great customer service, and the converter works great! I wired it so the cabling runs into the spare tire area, and I just open the trunk and lift up the carpet to get to the plug. I plug it into my trailer, and gently close the trunk on the wires. It seems to work okay without pinching them.

When I get back from the lake, the wiring goes back into the spare tire well.

I tow a double sea doo trailer with my 99 A6.
