If they're any good they should have known they had the wrong filter BEFORE they dropped your pan. In any case, IMO they owe you a new drain & fill including gasket, on them, when they install the filter that they should have confirmed was the right one BEFORE opening up your AT pan.

Risk of contaminating new fluid with a dirty filter? He will have to drain and refill again to do the filter. I assume he will put in fresh fluid or is he going to capture it and put it back in?

A lot of fluid is up in the torque converter and doesn't come out when you drop the pan. I did the math on the A6 2.8q, and IIRC I think I figured I got about 80-85% of the fluid with a filter change, followed a month later with a drain and refill only (no filter, no drop the pan).
If the drained fluid was really bad, paying for all new fluid again, when the have the right filter, is not a bad thing. You will get a much more complete fluid changeout by doing this.

....just got off the phone with Inskip Audi (RI). They quoted me $650 for a tranny service after the noob SR tried to tell me that the service was not recommended by Audi AG. I tried to politely explain what my AW friends have been discussing/researching/doing with their ZFs. He's never heard of AW or 'servicing a tiptronic tranny'. I asked him to speak with the SM and/or a tech. He said he'd do it and call me right back. I called him the next day....because he never did. That's when I got the price. I told him to stuff it (very nicely) and that Mattie Audi (nearby MA) would do the service for $350.....it's just that I'm getting tired of the 40mi (one way) drive. What a shame that the closest stealer is just that - and arrogant to boot! Mattie told me to bring it in the day/night before because this service is performed on a stone-cold tranny - I was impressed that they knew this fact. So, I'm doing the only thing I can do as a consumer - I'm taking my $$$ somewhere else!

....they're the ones who replaced a bad cat and charged me $1200! Then when I found out (through this wonderful forum) cats are covered by a federal warranty....they refunded my money with so much as a 'oops - sorry'.

Then you'll do a good change out of everything, better than just doing it right the first time.
