Default Tranny Fluid Level...

'01 A6 2.7T

I was thinking that the sputtering that I have been experiencing is linked to the fluid level being overfilled in the trans. Vag-Com doesn't give me any indication that there is a problem with my engine even though when it is sputtering the cel blinks. What type of symptoms should I be experiencing from over filling the trans? I know that it requires your car to be level to check the fluid level. Does that mean that I should check that the trans pan is level? I will be checking the level while the car is on jack stands and I need to know exactly what level means. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Default Try replacing the coolant temp sensor just for grins.

That's the only thing I can think of that might cause problems without throwing codes.

Default Level means flat. Get it close and you'll be OK. VAG-COM can tell you what temp the fluid is at.

How many miles are on it?

Was the trans. fluid drained? flushed?

How much new fluid was able to be put in?

How long has it been sputtering?

What did the old fluid look like?

Were there many flakes on the magnets in the pan?

Default CAR needs to be level. By that, I mean it needs to be sitting the way it would

normally sit.

The car must be level.

The car must be COLD.

You must connect with vag and it will read out the transmission temprature.

Start the car and let it idle to warm up. At the threshold temp, fluid should start leaking out of the fill plug. This is the proper way to check the fluid level.

It's not an easy thing to do.

The car has about 113K and has been about 50K since the trans. fluid and filter change. Can't remember how much fluid was put in. It's been sputtering for the last couple of weeks. While sputtering the cel was blinking but Vag-Com didn't state that I had any engine problems. The old fluid was in good shape and didn't smell burnt. Not many flakes either. I just don't think that I ever had the level correct and might have overfilled it. Could overfilling cause sputtering?
