Default Tranny problems in 92-97's?

Muhammad,

I found this older posting from you regarding the tranny probs in the 1992-97 90's and 100's and A6's, et al... Any new updates? Any way to find out if you're going to have this problem, and get it proactively fixed while under warranty? Has Audi issued any response/recall on this?

I have 53k on my 96 A6Q, and I'm worried about this happening down the road...

Thanks!

While I wish I knew the exact cause of the problem, I'm just glad I don't have it. I have talked with several 12v A6/auto transmission owners who have had the problem, and I haven't gotten the idea that even the ones who had it fixed knew what the hell was wrong with it in the first place, other than it doesn't catch gear when shifting and the engine can actually rev as the car is in effect in neutral when this happens.

But the good news is, this transmission was only sold on models from 1992-1997. The 1998 A6 redesign got a tiptronic automanual that I haven't heard of any problems with.

The models with the transmission with known problems are:

1992-1994 100/100S/100CS FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

1992-1994 S4 if equipped with automatic (I'm not clear on this one, whether the S4 was ever offered w/automatic)

1995-1997 A6 FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

1995-1995.5 S6 if equipped with automatic (I'm also not clear on this one, whether it was ever offered w/automatic)

1992-1994 90/90S/90CS FWD or Quattro models w/automatic transmission.

Hope this helps,

Muhammad

I did find this report on CarPoint, which mentions some reported problems with the Automatic Transmission on the 1996's, but the repair is said to be "$80 for parts and $520 for labor," not the $5,000-$7,000 that I've seen mentioned for a complete transmission rebuild... Any comments?

Yes, that's the major problem that would require rebuilding the transmission most common in the 1992-1994 models, I think. I was pretty concerned after buying the 100CS, trying to find the cause... I even talked to guys who had the rebuild done and the best I got was what you see above - 'doesn't catch gear when shifting and the engine can actually rev as the car is in effect in neutral when this happens' ... I think one described it as when the car goes to shift, it will not catch a gear and the RPMs will jump up 750-1,000 before it gets in another gear. Your RPMs will go up with a normal shift, so I would say the there would be a delay of probably a second or more before it gets in another gear. But how would I know, really. Maybe if an owner (or previous owner) of a defective transmission is on here, he or she could comment about the exact problem. Sorry to not have a super clear description but like I said, I don't have the problem in either, and just have gone from what others have said.

If it breaks while you are under the Audi warranty, it will be fixed. Audi never issued a recall although owners with the problem think they should have! I've heard different stories about the problem mentioned above being corrected after a run of the 1992 models were really bad. Of course this may be way off by now since it's been passed on, and on, and then to me, I guess! Carpoint reports significant problems, so that is a reason to think they (Audi) didn't fix all the problems, if they fixed any.

I plan to keep the 100CS until the end of 2001 at least, which should get me another 20k on the car to bring it near 100,000. I maintain both of them to Audi specs and don't plan on having any problems. If I were you (and you know, I'm in it double with these transmissions) I wouldn't worry much unless it starts acting up. Just know that this model is at some risk of having a transmission failure once you get some miles on it. Consider an aftermarket warranty like I did (on both)... might be a good idea not only for the transmission but also for any other problem that might come up.<p>-----

I'm currently driving a 92 100s. My transmission is all messed up. I had hard shifting in between gears for a very short period and now it has "defaulted" to third gear. Transmission repairs have be quoted by two independant sources at 1400 USD (weird). I guess the transmission knows there's a problem and puts itself in third gear to protect itself. I just got the Audi dealer transmission repair manual off of ebay for 20USD... we'll see what I see. If it's just an easily replaced solenoid... I'll do it myself.
