Default Transmission acting weird

My tranny has been acting weird the past few days... it clunks into reverse when its cold, and I can feel it downshift hard into first when I am coming to a stop (which I never used to feel.) Is there any reason why this would randomly start happening? The car has 151k on it, but I heard the pre-2001 A6 2.8 transmissions are quite reliable.

Thanks!

Also if I am coasting around 30mph and then step on the gas it almost feels like the transmission takes a moment to kick into gear... its always been really smooth

I kinda am getting that too. But on the 4.2 it stays in 3rd until a complete stop so you dont feel the downshift. I'm guessing its from 4th to 3rd I feel it. I get the clunk from R to D or D to R. Its wierd hearing it.

Check fluid level, pull codes. When was the last time you changed the fluid?

Get the car elevated and level, hook up VAG-COM, start car, remove fill plug on trans pan, pump in as much fluid as it will take, wait for temp to hit 40 +/-5 degrees, replace plug.

Has this transmission ever been serviced? Big difference between reliable and maintenance free.

Does this kit have the adequate amount of fluid? I seem to remember it requiring more...
