Default Transmission fluid

Does anyone know how to check the level of transmission fluid? I am leaking what I think is transmission fluid and while I am trying to find the problem I just want to make sure I don't get too low and damage the tranny. Also does anyone know what seals or gaskets normally leak on the tranny? Just want a place to start looking? Thanks!

Default you have to have the car level in the air, and up to operating temperature. ....

there are 2 large bore plugs on the trans pan, one is more or less on the bottom, the other one is up inside a bit of a 'tunnel'.. remove the one in the tunnel. you should have fluid up to teh edge of the hole. if not, you are low.

The fluid can leak from a number of places.. the imput shaft seal, the left axle seal.. the pan seal.. etc..

where is the fluid leaking on your car? What color is the fluid?

Default trans fluid is yellow when new and turns brown.

Bilstein makes an aftermarket fluid that much cheaper than buying from the dealer. It comes in a blue bottle and import car places usually carry it.

The leak is somewhere on the driver's side front. I am not exactly sure where, because it has managed to drip into the wheel well somehow and has gotten sprayed all over the place. I need to clean everything up and then go hunting. I just want to keep the fluid up while I am doing this. Do I need a special key to remove that plug in the tranny?

The fluid is like a honey color

Default Sounds like it may be the same thing I had..

which is the driver's side axle seal... if that one fails, transmission fluid leaks out.. That's the only fluid that fits that description in that area.

Default I just checked the front diff oil in the wife's 1999 auto.

Even at 173k it looked like new - light colored honey.

Default Tip I assume? Need 17mm hex wrench - BMF. The other one is drain plug and that is 10mm hex, IIRC.

If tranny is hotter than like 95 deg F then fluid will leak out the fill hole if it is full. Car has to be level and engine running to get proper fill level. If you can fit fluid in the tranny while engine is off, you are low. No good way to do this on this tranny.

Default It's really not "operating temperature", but rather a narrow band of temps.
