Transmission GONE :(

Just bought the 2001 4.2 three months ago with 105,000 kms. Beginning yesterday, when I shift into reverse, transmission does not engage. Engine revs high but car goes nowhere. All other gears work fine. Took the car to a reputable tranny shop in Toronto and, after initial diagnosis, they are saying the trans has to come out for further evalutation.
After reading other posts with similar problems, it looks like it may be one of the clutches in the tranny.
Regardless, the shop is giving me a very 'rough' quote of $2700 to $5200 CND before they have opened it up. Seems reasonable considering the symptoms. What do you guys think?
Also, while I have the tranny open, is there any other 'beefing up' that can be done to increase its torque handling? I may upgrade in the future with chip, tip chip, and exhaust, and I know the tranny has been considered a week spot.
Lastly, any other work/maintenance that is easily done when the tranny is out?
Any help or advice in this matter is appreciated.

I feel your pain.. my transmission in my 2001 4.2 "died" at 60,000 miles. Luckily I have an extended warranty and for a measily $50 deductible.. Audi replaced my transmission.

There are a zillion 4.2 (ZF 5HP24FLA) transmission threads in D2A8.
I'd go with European transmissions in Cumming GA, but they're local for me.

I think the shop Im dealing with is capable of performing a complete rebuild on this transmission. http://www.acetransmission.ca
Anyone recommend any others, Canadian if possible?

There is a network of authorized shops that install the rebuilds, and presumably you get a good warranty. That's got to be the best option if you have such a shop nearby.

Considering the cost of a transmission rebuild, I am definately going to take the advice of JimR and yourself and make sure a quality shop is performing the work. Ive rented a car for now so I can track down a ZF authorized place around Toronto.
