Can any one advise me - My 1996 A6 2.3 has developed a strange probelm . When the auto transmission shifts from (What I will describe as) 2nd to Third gear there is a short but loud buzzing (Like a buzz saw) . The car still performs OK , only proble is the sound just developed after I left the car in the garage for a week. I'm wondering what might be the solution. Is it a serious problem?
Appreciate any help.

Is it a chirp? Does the sound come on the gear change, or does it last longer?

Hi, The sound only comes as the auto transmissionn changes from 2nd to third. Kind of a ZZZZZIIIIPPPP that lasts about 1 full second. It seems to sound like a slippage of some kind.
Pls help.

check to make sure your exhaust cans or pipes aren't rattling temporarily against the transmission. The whole exhaust system is hung from "rubber" isolators, which can sometimes crack or break; other similar mechanical things could be throwing the piping out of alignment. When gear shifts, the engine torque change can throw the tranny up against a mishung exhaust (the engine/tranny floats on mounts). Midas or such should be happy to inspect.

I can't believe this!
workshop says a defective radiator caused coolant to enter gearbox. Hence I must chang radiator, coolant unit AND gearbox!! Gosh is this possible? and isn't this a design flaw? Do other continental cars have this kind of design?
