Trip computer display is blank

The trip computer display on my 2001 A6 went suddenly blank, except for
the bottom row indicating the gear.
When the car is in park, the display shows the usual message about pushing the brakes, but when shifted to drive the display disappears completely. The radio channel doesn't show either, and the reset and change buttons have no effect.
Does anybody have any ideas or advice? (I've seen wss03's 12-21-00 postings about the fading display - but this seems to be something else.)
Thanks.

I believe you just turned the display off by mistake. You can turn on/off the display by pressing the trip computer reset button. But unlike the reset where you hold the button for a few seconds, you just press it and it toggles the display. Try it. It's in the manual.
