Trip to Tahoe this weekend - do I need chains/can I use chains?

I checked the manual and performed a search on the forum but I still don't have a clue! I've got the sport package with the BBS wheels and am pretty nervous about putting on chains. On the other hand, I'm pretty nervous about driving in the snow with sport tires even w/ quattro. Maybe I should just rent a (dreaded) sport utility and leave my baby at home? Please advise!

I'm going to have to bribe some friends to drive me up this weekend, as my car still has P6k's on them. I MUST GO SNOWBOARDING THIS WEEKEND!!!
I keep forgetting SUV's aren't that expensive to rent... but then again, I have an expensive awd sitting out front... :P

Not only you SHOULDN'T, but with the predicted weather, it would be illegal. You need to have AWD and at least M&S tires to qualify for R2 conditions. Beyond R2 is where you would also need chains...BUT the CHP'ers would almost certainly have the road closed if conditions went to R3 level.
Get up early tomorrow...call your local Americas Tire, or equivalent and find a place that has some snows in your size, or spend almost as much and rent an SUV...at least with the SUV you won't care about the road crap pounding the front end of the car.
Don't put chains on your car...it would be very difficult to find a set that will fit without clearance problems, they are a royal pain in the ***, and snows are more effective.
Have fun in Tahoe, man!

With the rain that is expected to be coming down, you do not want to be putting/taking off chains. And as Finman said, with the rental of one SUV for the weekend you can pick up a set of snows for the season.
You've got quattro- enjoy it. quattro and snows will give you a whole new level of appreciation for the masterpiece you drive. Plus the looks of all the SUV's as they try to drive a straight line and you're passing them is a classic (as long as conditions permit).

Tahoe Trip

If so, how is the ride on dry pavement? Can I live with them for 3 months? I only go to snow country 2-3 times a year and I'm not sure it's worth it.

with 235/45 tires so I don't see how you could use chains. You may have a little more clearance if you're running 225s, but it would still be very tight.

It takes me approximately 20 minutes to change all the wheels on the car...that is, when I'm in "Indy"-mode...the hard part is the hour I spend cleaning them all and then cleaning the snows a few days later when I return.
I figure 20 minutes to an hour, both before and after a trip to the snow-country is well worth it. Many people spend much more time than that preparing in other ways (packing, finding the ski-stuff, going out to buy new goggles, etc).
This set of snows is nice because they will fit either the 4.2 or the S6.
I'd let ya' borrow mine (I'm on the way to Tahoe), but methinks the 255s might cause you some clearance problems...oh, and besides, they're sooooo nice and clean now![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Like "pwaug" mentioned, you don't have enough clearance to suspension. It'll do big time damage. If you don't want snow tires, check out the link on the spikes-spider.

http://www.spikes-spider.com/</a

Do not drive in the snow with the performance tires. I live in Colorado and drove in a heavy snow a few weeks ago with the Dunlop performance tires. I don't recomend this! Went out the next day and a set of snow tires put on the car. Last time it snowed it was great. The roads where icy, but I had no issues at all. The car went from the worst snow car I had driven to the best.
