Default

The sad thing is that I'm fond of the original SHO and the SVTs.

Default My father had the oringal SHO as a 'winter beater' when it first came out.

I was in high school at the time and he was still doing the 'store the AMG in winter, drive something fwd or awd in the winter' routine.

That car was a lot of fun, all to the credit of YAMAHA!

Fortunately for him, I talked him into helping me into a 3 yr old '86 5ktq that year (he had no idea why I wanted THAT car), which shortly thereafter ended the MB era (approx 20 years w/ MB for him - two '80s AMG 540SE's, a '69 6.3, '80 500SL, '58 220cab, '78 240c, '78 450sel, others I forget).

Anyway, the SHO was a blast, but when I left the 5ktq at home my first winter at college, he promptly put a chip in it and later discovered Hakka's, and it was the end of MB's place in the family garage and the 'winter cars' brigade (which somewhat shamefully included an AMC Eagle, upon which I learned to drive stick at 15). Thereafter it was all Audi - a 91 200q 20v, a 93 S4, and an 01 A6 2.7t...

/end nostalgia.

I'm afraid (though I haven't seen it in person) even I can't justify the schnoz on that new A6 though... worst part is actually the fact that the front wheels are so far BACK - they need to move them forward - the profile view looks like a freaking BEAK. Bah, anyway...

Default The motor in the SHO was a peach. Seats were just awful - at least for 100lb folks like me;-)

Even though we lived in the snowy north, we had a procession of Datsuns and Toyotas with a lonely but long lived MB diesel fir spice. Actually, Dad was into Japanese cars long before they became popular up there.

Default Ford doesn't appear to have learned a thing from that great motor, either.

Does Yamaha build motors for any other cars, or have they, since then? Always seemed odd that here they were with this superstar engine and, well, that was it. Seems like it should have been the start of something grand for them - I know they build great outboard boat motors...

Funny you mention the long lived MB deisel - that was my father's first MB, before I was even born - some little early '70s putt putt that could barely move the car uphill faster than 4o mph! But it went forever - I guess it had to, it sure took forever to get where you were going!

Default I thought it ironic that the higher powered V8 that followed, was actually slower!

Southern BC is nothing but mountains. I think that poor Merc shuddered in fear every time it rolled out of the garage ;-)
