Any idea what they are reflashing "the unit"? I would assume that it is just an LCD driver on the flex circuit and they don't typically have any resident flash. Of course I'm not familiar with this VDO implementation so maybe they have a micro or ASIC acting as a driver on the flex. I think I saw somewhere that Gavin of ModuleMaster claimed that there driver is proprietary so that might be the case. The other possibility is that the LCD and driver require some calibration which is stored in the main micro of the cluster.

So does anyone know if the driver IC or LCD is defective? Or is there just an interconnect problem from the driver to flex or from the LCD to flex or mainboard to flex? I saw references in some of the posts to hot air reflow equipment typically used for mounting surface mount components. Is this needed for the cluster repair to rebond a loose joint or to replace one of the components?

Failure is in the row and colum drive signals from the LCD controller chip.

Problem is this "flip chip" resides on the flex cable and is currently unidentified device.

It can be "short-term" repaired, but to make the repair last is difficult.
