Use of cell phone inside car?

I just bought a terrific '98 2.8 quattro with only 19K miles on it, so I guess the "potentialowner" name will have to change. Anyway, the manual says never to use your own handheld mobile phone with its antenna inside the car because it can screw up the electronics and could be dangerous to your health. They recommend only using the dealer-installed phone with the outside antenna. Is this true, or is it just the lawyers talking? Any advice would be appreciated, since I do need to use my own cell inside the car without the factory antenna.
By the way, thanks again to all who gave me good advice pre-purchase.

Thanks. I never use the mobile while driving (illegal here and it really bugs me when I see others do it). I meant stopped on the side of the road or my wife calling from the passenger seat.
