Default Use sealing compound during water pump replacement?

The Bentley manual doesn't mention it, but the pump came with instructions and says to use apply sealing compound on the pump gasket. Anyone where I can get this sealing compound?

I used Permatex Hylomar, but I've also seen Permatex silver RTV mentioned.

Default Ask your mechanic friend that will be helping you. Don't do this job yourself. To be blunt,

if you don't know where to buy or what to put on the water pump gasket, you will mess the job up some where along the line.

The job is too advanced for you to do by yourself. You need a teacher to help you do it.

Default A thin layer is easy to do

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/enginemechanical/tbp40.JPG">

Just go to the auto parts store and get some sealant for water pumps, put a smaller layer on the water pump, let it stand for 2-3 minutes, lay the gasket on it, then put a small layer on the gasket, let it stand 2-3 minutes, then install the pump.

If you install it without letting the gasket sealer oxidize a little, everything squirms all over the place, if you let it set up a little, it works perfect.

BTW, that's an A8 water pump shown.

Good luck!

Default Sealing compound not necessary

except to help you keep the gasket on the pump while you get the first couple bolts started. I usually just dab 4 or 5 little spots around the water pump side, attach the gasket, and mount to block. If you ever have to replace a pump where the last guy to install was "sealant happy", your in for a real treat. Add an hour to the job so you can chip all that crap off. You dont have to add sealant and crank down on the bolts. The system holds less than 15 pounds pressure, so go easy. Ed

Agreed, don't over do it...some water pumps come with a bead on the gasket
