Default VAG-COM Cable Question: "User-Interface not found/ready"

I recently bought a VAG-COM cable for my car off of eBay for like $10 and thought, what the hell if it works great, if not it was only a $10 loss. It was advertised as working for the 2003 Audi A6 2.7T (along with other models too).

The cable comes, and I install both VAG-COM release 311-2 and 409-1 and I hook the car up to the cable up to the USB port in my laptop.

Anyway, I could not get it to work. I tried with just the battery on and then with the car running and it would not work. I kept getting "User Interface not ready" or something to that extent.

So is the cable just no good (i.e. a waste of money) or is there more to do to get this to work. Maybe someone else has had this problem and got it to work.

If the cable is no good, can anyone point me to a reputable place to get a cable or the like?

Default I just tried the same approach.... Didnt work on my A6 or my Friend's 97 Golf.

The guy I bought mine from offers a refund if it doesn't work, so obviously he has some success stories. If you have patience and a Little computer whit, maybe you can figure it out.

As for mine, I sent it back and got my $20 back (to save for the RossTech, no hassles and software support)

Default I have the cheap usb generic cable... basic stuff works fine for me, just have to install drivers

For serial to usb. I'm limited on some functionality though like the advanced modes and programming, I think.
