VW W8 Passat

As an owner of a 2001 2.7T Tip, I am going to test drive the W8 Passat, which has gotten rave revues, to see if it would be a better purchase than the Audi A6 at around approx $5000 cheaper. I just want to know if it will cut into Audi sales which I think are somewhat slowing down, as I see more and more Audi ads in the press, and that usually means slower sales. I would really love to purchase the RS^, but at this time can only dream of it <sigh>.

Looked at (but did not drive) the W8 Passat. My somewhat snarky opinion is that the appointments, which seem perfectly fine on a C$30-40k VW seem a little cheap on a C$50k VW. I like the Audis better, despite being reminded of the shared Golf heritage by the VAG parts bin pieces.
My suggestion is to try a W8 sports model (coming soon?) back to back with an S6 Avant, and see if this very nicely sorted out Audi seems worth the premium of about one 1.8T Passat!
P.S. Audi sales are up significantly this year among us (very cheap) Canadians, but I think it's mainly the new A4.

I test draw the W8 and A6 (3.0) a couple of weeks ago. The VW certainly has lots of horse power, great engine, but the inside looks "cheap" compared to A6. After the testdrive of VW I rushed back to Audi and ordered the A6 (already got it).

didn't like it. It seemed underdamped and I found the engine noise excessive. Kind of like somebody slipped a hot small block into your mother-in-laws LeSabre but forgot to freshen it's well run in suspension. The Tiptronic did nothing to improve my impression of the car either. This car needs sport suspension, seats, and a 6 speed before I would consider it. At that I am nervous about the cost of repair or replacement of that engine once warrantee has passed. The VW rep let slip that the cost of a "service engine" is currently $18,000!!! This needs to be verified but if it's anywhere near accurate an extended warrantee seems prudent. Subsequent to this drive I purchased an A6.

Nice car. Loved the engine torque and sound. The car is considerable shorter and less wide than my A6. Performance is a tad on the poky side as well...must be smaller horses than those in the turbo. I'd wait for the sport package and 6-speed. All in all, very nice ride, though.

Drove it yesterday and was impressed with the acceleration and braking, but little things like rear seats don't fold down, less trunk space, cheezy interior, room is a little larger than the A4, not crazy about the antenna on the roof,no controls for heat/air in rear, plus seating a little cramped overall. I will stick with Audi for the reasonable future.
