sounds familiar....both my 3.0s were quite noisy...
especially with 5W-40. My 03 got significantly worse when my dealer insisted I used Audi's approved oil list and switched from 0W-30 German Castrol.
My avant is very quiet and smooth on 0W-30 German Castrol. Switching dealers, they had no problem with this oil, and said really it is the customer's preference, especially when the oil meets or exceeds Audi's own standards.

I've been using 15-50 aaam1, no noise at all. Now I'm told by AoA that the4 15-50 is not an
approved oil, so I guess I will give the two annoited M-l'a looksee nect oil change.
