I saved a bunch of money by purchasing a bumper to bumper warranty from Continental Warranty. They approved my claim, and I get car rental reimbursement too. Am not their spokesman or something am just really happy. I had a warranty from Wynns on my previous 2.7t, and they messed me up big time. From what am told CPO Audis are covered by the same warranty company.
Water pump is $235 + 7 hours labor.

http://www.continentalwarranty.com</a

I'd suggest paying for a timing belt and tensioner while they have it apart.
Shouldn't add more than $150-$200 to the job... otherwise you'll have to pay for that 7 hours again.
How many miles? Timing belt should be done at 60k. If you're anywhere close to that, I'd go for it. Even if you're at 45k.

did the pump die or did they make diagnosis from just the leak? more:
...or can one say that the pump is technically "dead" if it is leaking. I ask because my warranty says "pay for things if they break" and "do not pay for things that break because of leak which user ignored".

Questions
How much did you pay for the warranty? When did you buy it? How much longer do you have coverage?
The only reason I'm asking is because when my water pump went I had the timing belt, serpentine belt, thermostat, roller, and tensioner replaced, too. Total job was $960.
When I bought my car, I considered an aftermarket warranty, but didn't go for it. The price was something like $1500 (give or take $100). The only thing that would've been covered so far would've been my water pump + labor, just like you, and a coolant bottle replacement, and the warranty would be up this coming October.
So far, for me, I've made the right decision. I'm just wondering if the AW consensus of always having a warranty is actually the right way to go about Audi ownership. Might not be.

Re: Water pump is leaking on my 2001 A6 4.2, but I have good news.....
I got the warranty for something close to $2,300. It is a bumper to bumper warranty, 4yrs 50K miles. I bought it whilst the car was still under original warranty, approx 49K miles, that was ummm 3 or 4 months ago. It basically covers everything and includes rental.
All of this started when my car began running warmer than usual. Most of the time, the car temp is dead in the middle of C and H, one day it leaned to the right. But it was like 100 F outside, maybe that had a little something to do with it. Next day it went back to the middle and would go back and forth between dead center and leaning. Eventually, it stopped returning to dead center and was more of a leaning tower. The water pump wasnt 'dead' but it was 'underperforming' and leaking. Even if you lift the hood whilst the car is running after a short trip, the whole engine bay was cool to the touch. So, dont open your hood expecting a huge wave of heat to hit you. Oh ya, the car wasnt passing other cars as fast as it used to. Very important, gotta keep those japanese cars in check!
So today, I dropped it off at the shop in College Park, MD, called the warranty company, they approved the claim and its gonna be fixed by tomorrow. The timing belt and hydraulic tensioner is also being changed. Just so you know, at myaudi.com, they recommend the timing belt to be changed at 100,000 miles or something. Wierd.

Purchasing and driving a car out of warranty is always a gamble, regardless of manufacturer.
My first Audi was 2000 A6 2.7t, 6 speed. And boy it was fast, truly an example of a "good build". It had just 39,000 miles when I got it. But 31 days, yes 31 days, the transmission died on me. Second gear fell and that was the end of it. Wynns warranty refused to cover it, and then said they no long cover twin turbos, blah blah. So my next car, I decided I would get the warranty from Continental and the rest you already know.
All of that happened just 6 months ago. So this is my 3rd car this year, and my 2nd Audi. I couldnt bear the thought of Benz or a BMW, so I bought a 4.2 instead. You gotta love and respect Quattro.
