Weird engine problems

Last night on the way home my car started to sputter almost like a cylinder wasnt firing or something. Very odd and then the check engine light popped on. The engine would sputter at about the same rate that the check engine light flashed on and off. So I cant tell if the check engine light is flashing at me or whether it's being tripped on and off at a fast rate.
Where to start looking?

Coil packs are a new thing to me. Is that something I can do assuming fault codes actually say the same thing?
Any idea on how these go bad? Is it normal wear and tear or because I have been ****ing with upgrades and ****.

codes 16684 and 16689 Code 84 says random cylinder misfires and code 89 says cylinder #5 is misfiring. SOOO...that's says what? Plugs, coilpacks, both? I assume I can just run down to the local auto parts and get some Bosch plugs, I wouldn't know anything more then that so I will just get the most expensive ones they have I guess. I don't know enough about coilpacks yet to say to do about those so advice would be appreciated.
Should I start with the plugs and see what happens? I'm not sure if they have ever been replaced unless Audi has done it under one of their 50k tune up's or something. The car is an 03 2.7t with about 70k miles.

Switch coilpacks between no.5 and no.6, then plug in your VAG-COM and monitor measurement block 016 - you will see which cylinder is misfiring. On my version of the software, the cylinders aren't labeled, but they are 4,5 and 6 from left to right. If you have moved the misfire to no.6, you know your problem.

So I need a new coil pack then. Do I replace all 6 at once or do I replace them as needed? Seems to me that if these things can wear out then replacing all now might be the best thing to do. The scary thing is that I think I can actually see where the bad coil pack was made incorrectly because the outside shield has 2 prongs not making contact with the shield. Were can I get coil packs or should I see if Audi will replace them under extended 100k Official Audi Warranty?
