Took it to the mechanic, he said may be an alternator that kicks in and out. Diagnosis coming...

And the solution is...

Bad battery. Thank you to those who pointed to this early on.

Swapped the allegedly bad battery from the A6 into car B, and it refused to hold a charge there (after being jump started several times). Put car B's battery (same size as the A6 battery) into the A6, and it performed just fine. Put the batteries back where they came from, replaced the battery in the A6, and it's been fine ever since.

Again, thanks to everyone who tossed out ideas.
