I think that is what is covered in the heat "foil."

Default never failes to amaze me...we have a perfectly good STOCK CAI....

so why mess with it and bring in heated engine air. The shields can't stop it as hot air rises and travels the path of least resistance.

EH...stock intake is crap. Makes the car too quiet, and is quite restrictive (even w/K&N)

Default The stock system takes cold outside air from above the radiator core support. Longer intake tract

results in more torque, while shorter increases horsepower - if the engine can rev to the range where it is effective.

As other point out, hot engine air is less dense than outside air, and for aerodynamic reasons the car comes with a belly pan that traps air rather effectively in the engine bay. Fan wash can also produce odd effects with regards to air/fuel metering.

If you can run an intake into the fender well without debris and water being an issue, that may be as effective or maybe slightly more effective than stock. Otherwise it's strictly cosmetic. That's why performance oriented Audi tuners don't offer a CIA for the A6.

FYI, I run two intakes for my track Alfa. An open cone type like yours for the street where the sound is more important than power, and a stock airbox on the track where power is everything.

Default Re: Measure the air temp entering at this location, and you will find it higher than

what the stock system allows. Any potential increase in flow would be negated by the higher temp intake air which would lead to an increased chance of detonation and resulting retarding of ignition timing, and less power. It supposed to be a COLD air intake, not allowing heated air to enter. Not to mention that cold air is denser than heated air, which also lowers power. A louder intake does bot equate to an intake making more power, just more noise. The proof is that this same issue has been discussed on a Porsche 944 turbo board after measuring intake temps with dyno runs.

Sometimes these German auto company engineers actually know what they are doing and why. Backyard tinkers are guessing most of the time relying on advertising claims or urban folklore.

Default Plenty on the S4 forums...over the years it has been tested many times with Dyno numbers...

...other attempts at "open air" inside the engine compartment have shown to actually be a LOSS of HP.
