The obvious is to have car good n tuned, tires inflated properly, keep extra weight out, but driving style is a huge factor.

C5 mileage
1999 A6 Avant quattro, 20 mpg mixed driving. Very consistent. Mileage computer is very optimistic and shows 23.8-24, but simple math averaged over several fill ups tells the truth.
My '96 A6 AQ did exactly the same with it's 4 spd. and 12v motor.
Driving style is slightly fast to average for New Jersey.
My wife's 98 A4 2.8 Q with a manual averages 23 mixed but has a much better gain on highway driving, 27-28, even at elevated speeds 70-85.
I'd say weight is the A6's enemy (and friend).

my 2003 A6 4.2 gets about 21 in mixed driving....as high as 24 on the high way and as low as 18 in the city if I get on it. Just hit 70K miles. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I've calculated mileage for the last 110k miles and it's pretty consistent at 23-24 mpg on the highway at 70-77 mph. Computer is optimistic, showing 25+. I do very little local driving -- this is my over the road, long haul machine. On the occasions when I am forced to drive at 55-60, the computer does show 27-31mpg which leads me to believe that I could attain 25-27mpg at reasonable speeds. PS - I have 147k on the car now and generally use midrange gas, tires currently inflated to 40 psi.
