Default The kind of oil that you CHECK REGULARLY!

Sorry, couldn't resist. You ask a big question. The weight may depend on where you live. The message right below this thread mentions 5W40 (some people use 0W40, 10W40, or 0W30, I think). A lot of people use synthetic, versus "dino" (natural) oil, because synthetic ages better.

Whatever you do, fill it up before driving further. I'm not sure about current Audis, but on some older cars, the oil light meant "you WERE low on oil, and have been for a long time. But, NOW you are so dangerously low that your engine is ALREADY damaged. Pull over immediately and STOP the engine!" We never relied on the oil light to tell us we needed oil... only the dipstick.

Default Why would they have a "you just damaged your engine light" as opposed to a "warning light" ?

But yes you should check your oil regularly, but I doubt that's what the light means.

Default Stop car immediatley, check oil level and add if necessary

that's according to the manual. DO NOT OVERFILL. If light comes back on, stop immediately and have your car taken to the nearest repair facility (dealer, etc.) Quite a few 2.7 owners use 0W30 or 5W30 (synth) or 5W30 or 10W30 dino due to the turbos... Also depends on your weather location... see your manual for recommendations

Default On Detroit iron, the oil light was a low/no oil pressure light. Audi has a oil level sensor that

will warn you if the oil is low before you lose oil pressure. Of course, it still means ADD OIL NOW!, but at least your engine isn't fried. Of course oil pressure isn't everything, you need enough oil in the pan for the lower end splash lubrication. Stoney's right - CHECK REGULARLY and while you're at it, add windshield washer fluid and avoid another nasty warning chime.

Default I am unaware of any recent vintage car engine that uses splash oiling.

Typically modern car engines try to avoid any of the oil in the pan touching the crank because of the drag and oil foaming this causes. There are often baffels added to the pan to keep the oil from splashing on to the crank. Of course the more exotic engines go a step further and use dry sump oiling to make sure the crank stays out of the oil during hard acceleration (turns, braking, etc.)

I didn't realize that Audi has an oil level sensor but that's much better than just a low pressure sensor. The pressure sensor indicates problems with the oiling system (pump, filter, etc.) well but only tells you the oil level is low when it is way too low.

Default And the new C-Class has no dipstick just an idiot light - how safe is that?

Had a chance last week to participate in a car clinic comparing the A4 with X-Type, C-Class, Alfa 156, BMW 3 Series and Volvo S60.

Couldn't believe that the C-Class didn't have a dipstick and placed total reliance on a microswitch that might easily fail

Default Just put a piece of black tape over it so it won't bother you anymore...

That's what my co-worker's mother did with her check engine light (that has been on for over a year!). It annoyed her, so that was her solution...is there any doubt as to why they call them "idiot" lights?
