I am looking into purchasing a 2001 Audi A6 2.7t, with around 30k miles. Tornado Red, automatic, asking price $17k.
What kind of problems should I be looking out for? I know a good shop for a PPI, so I'm hoping that will uncover any major issues. Also, this is not a CPO car, but rather a "dealer certified" car...whatever that means.
Thanks!
Listed options (I know, some of it is fluff)
AM/FM Stereo, Auxiliary Pwr Outlet, Bucket Seats, Cassette, CD Player, Cell Phone Hookup, Driver Lumbar, Dual Zone A/C, Electronic Stability Control, Fog Lamps, Front Floor Mats, Front Reading Lamps, Full Size Spare Tire, Heated Exterior Driver Mirror, Heated Exterior Passenger Mirror, Heated Mirrors, Intermittent Wipers, Keyless Entry, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, Pass-Through Rear Seat, Passenger Air Bag, Rear Seat Heat Ducts, Remote Trunk Release, Side Air Bag, Side Head Air Bag, Tires - Front Performance, Tires - Rear Performance, Traction Control

-> More pictures are here <-

I got mine '03 A6 2.7T with 58K for the same prize. Perfect condition. Check the link below for really good Audi-s and prices you can call or find on cars.com under the saem dealer name. Mine is still listed there. I've heard that '01 A6 some times have problems with air bag and ABS modules.

http://www.bayimports.net</a

Check for coolant smells around the engine bay, check for oil leaks and transmission fluid leaks. Check the tie rod ends for any play, same for control arms.
If the check engine light comes on in the 1st couple of weeks, check the codes (ideally find someone with VAG-COM), and then take the car back, they are probably required by law to fix it.

...for example, was it really only driven about 5k miles per year, or did it spend a LOT of time sitting...perhaps in a shop getting fixed?
Definitely have that car checked out by a mechanic, also look for evidence of body work.

Hmm yeah, I wasn't sure. Can I talk to an Audi dealer to get the service history?
(btw bostondriver, the car is at herb chambers)

Although it cannot be treated as 100% accurate, it may give you a glimpse of whether or not the stated mileage on the car is accurate. CarFax does a "consistency check" on mileage, noting reported mileage over time. If the mileage is reported by dealer/mechanic/state inspection board/etc. you will be able to tell if it's real or bogus.
If real, that's a pretty good price for such a low mileage car.
I'm a big fan of buying low mileage. Reduces the "unknown" factor.

or so after buying, i noticed that it obviously had a bondo patch job, and apparently sanded down by a monkey with 220 grit. i only noticed it because there was a paint bubble forming
