What Makes Audi's Quattro better than BMW/Mercedes 4WD ?
I've only ever owned RWD BMW's and Merc's so I don't have any reference point. I also don't understand the technology enough to know why Quattro should be better. I saw that video on youtube where an A6 C5 allroad got higher up the snowy mountain than all other contenders (Volvo, BMW, Lexus, Land Rover etc), so I believe it is better, I just don't know why.

I think Audi no longer has the AWD advantage anymore...
I don't think people typically drive up snowy hills/mountains in a car. Almost every car brand now seems to have AWD as an option now. Most people that actually need AWD can now look to more reliable brands.

Some info I found on this thread. Don't now how accurate or up-to-date. YMMV.

My firsst response would have to be because Audi has been doing it longer,
and has a long racing history using quattro to further enhance developement. Besides, Audi is better, na na na na naaaa na!

2nd - real world/racing experience has no substitute
Then again, Audi engineers still haven't learned to use stainless steel fasteners on the lower door trim or to modify a squeeling Climate control fan.

Disagree. The xDrive system in our 328xi isn't nearly as surefooted as our Q7
We live on a hill and when it snows the BMW has a tougher time getting up it. It seems as if it is entirely rear biased and then has to take the time to think about using the front wheels. I noticed it first coming across a mountain pass with my fiancee driving the 328 and me following her in the Q7. We were stopped in traffic on packed snow on a slight incline and every time she would come away from a stop the back end would kick out a few degrees to the right. The Q7 on the same terrain did nothing.. just moved forward like it was dry pavement.
