Should it be towed to the dealership (flatbed of course)?
Damn, it's much harder to convince my wife to get an A4 Avant now.

Default Usually emissions related. Possible vacuum hose.

Nah, no need to tow. You can usually drive it around for awhile with no adverse reactions. not a big deal. I drove mine for weeks.

Nah. You can usually drive it for awhile without much additional harm. Its really no biggie.

Default This is a true idiot light

It could mean any of 10 or 12 things, none of which you can figure out on your own. If the light is on steady, the car is OK to drive for a while. If it's flashing, flatbed it!

When you call for service, they will tell you that it usually means the gas cap wasn't put on tightly enough, and they seem to be right most of the time. However, since you just had a service, it's more likely that something wasn't done or done completely.

Default It really could be a number of things. I heard this one Audi owner ranting one day in the service

department about how the check engine light had been 5 for 5 of 5 different issues.

I know it's not the gas cap cause I picked up the car last Friday morning. Drove it all day and the light came on on Sat afternoon. Haven't touched the gas cap at all.

Default You can thank the Feds and OBD II

That's why the wording is so vague (what exactly does "check engine" mean? Does it sometimes fall out without notice?)

Default Mine is doing an intermittent thing right now (on for a few days, then off)...

I've had it come on for a loose secondary air pump hose (knocked off at dealer). It is now showing a "lean" mixture, but has corrected itself and now has gone off for last 3 days. I don't think a solid light is a problem for short term, blinking is another thing. The only other one I can remember was a coolent temperature sensor problem that required replacment.

All these were repaired at normal service intervals I believe, and really caused no concern due to knowing the problem (VAG-COM).

P.S. Did you get to drive in the little blizzard this morning? What fun!

Default Au contraire, flashing vs solid has NOTHING to do with *engine* damage

Only *catalyst* damage...see my <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/102590.phtml">previous posting</a>.
